Internationality in working life refers to a workplace made up of people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. It is reflected in language skills, ways of working, cultural practices, and different approaches to problem-solving. Internationality also includes the ability to operate in a global environment and to understand the needs of different markets and customers.
At Wapice, internationality is a strong part of our everyday work. Experts from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds enrich our workplace by bringing new perspectives, skills, and ways to solve challenges.
Our staff represents over 20 nationalities, which brings broad experience and diverse viewpoints to our work. We have experts from various countries and cultures, as well as different educational and career backgrounds. This strengthens our ability to work on international projects and serve our customers globally.
Equality as the basis of the workplace community
In everyday work, internationality means inclusive ways of working, an open discussion culture, and promoting equality across cultures. We ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate in and influence the company’s activities, regardless of their background or location. This is reflected in our recruitment practices, support for career development, and leadership, where fairness and inclusiveness are emphasized.
At Wapice, inclusiveness is reflected in our meeting practices. Everyone has the opportunity to participate in discussions using a shared language (English) and decisions are not based solely on the loudest voices. When needed, topics are also handled in writing so that everyone can contribute in the way that suits them best.
In our feedback culture, we take cultural differences in communication into account and ensure that feedback is clear, constructive, and easy to understand. When necessary, feedback is discussed together to ensure a shared understanding.
Our internal communication language is English. In practice, this means that Teams discussions, documentation, and company-wide announcements are prepared in English so that everyone stays equally informed. Teams also pay attention to using a common language in informal situations, enabling everyone to participate in coffee break conversations and discussions on the Mattermost communication channel. Working in an international environment requires communication that is clear, open, and inclusive.
In daily work, we also consider the needs arising from different cultures and life situations. Our flexible way of working allows people to adapt their work to different situations and supports smooth collaboration in international teams. This is reflected, for example, in flexible working hours, remote work opportunities, and respect for different holidays and customs.
Broader perspectives lead to better solutions
Internationality is not just about different nationalities—it also includes different ways of thinking, making decisions, and building collaboration. In our daily work, it is reflected in open interaction, mutual respect, and a willingness to learn from one another. Teams actively share best practices and learn new ways to solve problems from each other: one person may bring experience from large international projects, while another offers deeper local customer insight.
From an organizational perspective, internationality brings significant benefits. It strengthens our ability to understand customers and different operating environments, which is especially important in a global and rapidly changing world. It also supports employee development and builds readiness to work in multicultural environments.
Making the most of internationality also requires continuous and conscious development. That is why we invest in building an organizational culture where different cultures and perspectives are seen as a strength, and where open dialogue plays a key role. Our goal is to create a work environment where everyone can safely share their expertise, opinions, and ideas.
Recruitment offers opportunities to international professionals
From the early days of Wapice, we have been ready to recruit international talent. Almost all of our career opportunities are open to international professionals, and we also hire talent from abroad. During the interview process, we ensure that candidates are evaluated based on their actual skills, not on cultural differences in communication.
When someone joins Wapice from another country, we support their relocation by helping, for example, with finding housing and offering practical advice for everyday life in Finland. At the same time, the organization learns from international employees who move to Finland, making learning in an international workplace a two-way process. While new employees become familiar with Finnish working culture and society, the organization continuously gains new ideas and practices from a global perspective.
Our international Wapice Talents program has included several international participants every year, and most of them continue working at Wapice. Since 2022, our trainee program has been very popular, with around half of the applicants having an international background.
There are some exceptions in recruitment, as certain customer projects may require excellent Finnish language skills. In such cases, job postings are published in Finnish. For us, it is essential that our customers find the right person for their specific needs.
An international work community strengthens our organization as a whole. It enhances collaboration, fosters innovation, and supports sustainable growth. At the same time, it enables us to build solutions that serve a broad international and increasingly global customer base, allowing us to respond in the best possible way to the evolving needs of the future of work.
