Open City Innovation Engine selected as an AI Gala finalist
Wapice’s Open City Innovation Engine has been selected as one of three finalists in the Best Public Sector AI Implementation of the Year category at the 2026 AI Gala.
Built on the IoT-TICKET platform, the solution helps cities use their existing data and infrastructure to deliver AI-powered services. The winner will be announced on 16 November at Logomo in Turku, as part of AI Finland’s AI Summit & Gala 2026..
Cities already have plenty of data, cameras, sensors and digital systems. Putting the information they generate to work in city services, however, often requires dedicated development. As a result, different cities end up building similar solutions from scratch.
Wapice’s Open City Innovation Engine offers a different approach. Cities can use AI to adapt ready-made applications to their own data and local needs. The solution is built on Wapice’s IoT-TICKET platform, which brings data, analytics, AI and applications together in one environment.
Better services using existing data
The applications can help cities analyse traffic, predict how people move through public areas and monitor how public spaces are used. This information helps cities plan services, allocate resources and anticipate changing needs.
With Open City Innovation Engine, we combine AI with a city’s existing data and ready-made applications. The same approach can be applied in manufacturing and other sectors.
“In cities, AI should lead to better services and make everyday life easier. With Open City Innovation Engine, we combine AI with a city’s existing data and ready-made applications. The same approach can be applied to manufacturing, energy and critical infrastructure, where AI-powered data analytics can support day-to-day operations and decision-making,” says Veli-Pekka Salo, Head of AI, Analytics and Automation at Wapice.
Reuse is central to the approach. Once an application has proven its value in one city, it can be adapted to meet the needs of others. That way, more cities can benefit from the work that went into the original application.
One of three finalists
Open City Innovation Engine is one of three finalists in the Best Public Sector AI Implementation of the Year category. The AI Gala recognises Finnish AI projects, individuals and innovations across ten award categories.
The winners will be announced at AI Summit & Gala 2026 on 16 November at Logomo in Turku.
