How Wapice helped HappyOrNot reduce integration costs by over 80%

When rising costs and technical limitations made HappyOrNot’s existing integration platform increasingly difficult to justify, Wapice found a better solution in the company’s Azure environment. In just eight weeks, six business-critical integrations were migrated to production, giving HappyOrNot a more flexible, cost-effective foundation for future development.

HappyOrNot is a Finnish technology company known worldwide for its iconic smiley-face feedback terminals. Today, its solutions help thousands of organizations collect, analyze and act on customer feedback, combining real-time microfeedback with advanced analytics and AI-powered features.

Behind these customer-facing services is a network of business systems that support HappyOrNot’s daily operations. Keeping information flowing reliably between them is essential for running and developing the business.

The challenge: Rising costs and limitations of the existing integration platform

HappyOrNot’s business systems, including Salesforce and NetSuite, were connected through a third-party integration platform (iPaaS). With renewal approaching, the vendor announced a significant price increase.

The price was only part of the problem. The platform’s licensing limited how many systems could be connected, so each new integration became a commercial discussion rather than a technical decision. When something failed, tracking down the cause was slow and difficult. And because the team that had originally built the integrations had moved on, keeping the platform running would have meant building up new expertise from scratch.

The insight: the best solution was already within reach

HappyOrNot already had a productive relationship with Wapice, so they asked whether Wapice could help.

When Wapice analysed the situation, one thing stood out: HappyOrNot was already using Microsoft Azure for its day-to-day IT operations. Azure Integration Services offered a reliable, scalable foundation for connecting key business systems such as Salesforce and NetSuite. Its usage-based pricing also meant that costs would be driven by actual integration activity rather than the number of systems connected.

We hadn’t realised how far our existing Azure environment could take us.

Tomi Leinonen, Director of Business Technology at HappyOrNot

HappyOrNot was convinced: they could save money and get a more capable integration solution at the same time. Instead of buying another standalone platform, they could extend their existing Azure environment with the services they needed, paying only for what they actually use. HappyOrNot also valued Wapice’s track record of delivering integrations quickly for similar use cases.

The solution: built to be owned, not just delivered

Wapice took responsibility for planning, designing and implementing the migration as a turnkey project, with HappyOrNot’s team participating in the testing phase.

With the legacy contract approaching its end, the schedule was tight. Wapice used AI-assisted development tools to analyse the existing integration definitions and generate test data, accelerating the migration process. During testing, the teams worked closely together and resolved questions in real time, helping keep the project on schedule.

The result was a successful migration of six integrations in just eight weeks, without interruptions to business processes.

The new solution is built on Azure Logic Apps, with Azure API Management as the entry point for both scheduled and on-demand runs. The entire environment is defined as code with Terraform and deployed through HappyOrNot’s existing DevOps workflows.

Wapice built on the tools we already had, and our integration costs dropped by more than 80%.

Tomi Leinonen, Director of Business Technology at HappyOrNot

“Consistency is what makes an integration platform reliable,” says Pasi Pelkkikangas, Lead Architect at Wapice. “Everything is implemented as code, so it can be version controlled, tested, and moved through a controlled delivery pipeline. It also creates a natural foundation for AI-driven development, where teams can describe the integration they need and AI helps plan and implement it. Every environment is consistent and every change is traceable. Nothing depends on someone remembering how it was set up.”

“HappyOrNot? Very happy,” says Tomi Leinonen, Director of Business Technology at HappyOrNot. “Wapice built on the tools we already had, and our integration costs dropped by more than 80%. We hadn’t realised how far our existing Azure environment could take us. Working with Wapice felt very seamless and natural as they adapted to our ways of working.”

The results

  • Over 80% lower annual integration costs.
  • Flexibility instead of fixed commitments. Costs follow actual usage, so HappyOrNot is no longer tied to expensive license periods or subject to price hikes at renewal.
  • Growth without license negotiations. Because Azure charges for usage rather than per connected system, adding a new system or business process is now simply a technical decision.
  • Faster troubleshooting. Every integration run is shown as a visual workflow, so the team can see exactly where a problem occurred and why.
  • Reduced dependency on individual developers. The entire setup is documented as code and can be maintained by HappyOrNot’s own IT team, Wapice, or any other partner with Azure skills.
