AI-Powered Snow Management with Destia
Wapice has been at the forefront of applied AI R&D for well over a decade. While we often work behind the scenes, we’re sometimes able to showcase the innovative solutions we’ve been working on—like our collaboration with Destia Oy. Together, we developed an AI-powered solution for smart snow management.
Effective snow management is essential for keeping society running in Finland. Countries with similar winter conditions can easily relate, while warmer regions might compare this to sandstorms covering roads, rockslides, sinkholes, or other disruptions. Utilizing AI to monitor these scenarios not only makes life easier and safer but also significantly reduces costs and optimizes natural resource usage. That’s why it has been a privilege to contribute our AI expertise to this project.
– The new solution has been developed for Destia’s winter maintenance operations and enables nationwide automated road condition monitoring across Finland. This provides a more accurate situational overview of winter maintenance needs and current road conditions, which can also support weather information services. Additionally, it enhances the efficiency of Destia’s weather control center and the operational management of winter maintenance. The system also collects statistical data on snow conditions in different locations, which could be further utilized for future analysis and development, explains Samuli Pohjola, Data Scientist from Wapice.
