Wapice and the University of Oulu have started a collaboration to create smart campus services. The University of Oulu utilizes Wapice’s IoT-TICKET platform and computer vision services on its smart campus. The goal is to provide campus users with real-time information about campus services and make campus services available to everyone.

Artificial intelligence for a better campus experience

During 2020, the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences moved to the Linnanmaa campus area, which previously served as the campus for the University of Oulu. The reorganization of services enabled a project to create additional services around campus. The first projects focused on measuring queues in restaurants and monitoring parking spaces. Wapice was selected as the supplier for the monitoring of parking spaces.

For parking spaces, the utilization rate of the parking space and the available parking spaces are measured. In the later stages of the project, campus users can be directed to free parking areas. The project aims to improve the functionality of the campus and bring added value to users. The goal is to solve this function with the help of computer vision and artificial intelligence.

“Camera technology and computer vision were selected based on the recommendations and experiences of other universities. On the other hand, other sensor-based solutions would have required large investments in electrical work or the drilling and installing of several hundred sensors into asphalt.” –Juha Waulu, Real Estate Specialist, University of Oulu.

Computer vision in a tough test

Even when utilizing computer vision and cameras, there can be problems. The target environment was really challenging, as there were a lot of trees and bushes in the parking area. This, along with the model decided by the university, made implementation difficult. This however was the plan. The most difficult parking area had been deliberately selected for testing. If computer vision works in that area, then it will also work in other areas.

“I think the cooperation with Wapice has gone well. With this project, we have gained a better understanding of the functionality of computer vision solutions in the campus environment and the costs of expanding operations.” –Juha Waulu, Real Estate Specialist, University of Oulu.

“Wapice has already created an extensive portfolio of different computer vision applications. We had ready-made components for the University of Oulu project and applied a suitable solution from them. We are actively researching and developing our AI technology. We have learned a lot in the project with University of Oulu. The cooperation with the university has been excellent. Regular reviews of the situation have enabled smooth sharing of information and status of the project.” –Joni Kontturi, Solution Consultant, Wapice Oy
